You can generally change your GESY personal doctor after 12 months with your current doctor. Exceptions apply. Contact the new doctor to check whether they can accept you, then arrange registration through the GESY Beneficiary Portal or the doctor’s practice. Confirm that the new registration has been accepted before assuming the transfer is complete.
This guide covers changing a personal doctor, often called a PD. If you have not enrolled in GESY before, start with our GESY registration guide.
When can you change your personal doctor?
The Health Insurance Organisation’s personal doctor services FAQ gives a general waiting period of 12 months between changes. Do not rely on older summaries describing six months as the standard rule.
The official list-management guidance describes exceptions, including children under two, certain moves from paediatric to adult personal doctors at ages 16–18, automatic assignment and specified changes involving a doctor’s GESY participation. Ask HIO which rule applies to your registration before making plans around an exception.
Check the new practice before starting the transfer
A directory entry can help you identify a doctor, but it does not confirm that their GESY list currently has space. Contact the practice directly and ask:
- Are you currently accepting new GESY beneficiaries on your personal doctor list?
- Do you accept someone in my age group and registration situation?
- Which clinic address and consultation languages apply?
- How are appointments, repeat requests and urgent enquiries handled?
- Should I submit a portal request first or arrange a registration visit?
If you are comparing options, use our guide to finding a GESY doctor. Confirm participation and acceptance with the practice or HIO rather than assuming that any doctor listed online is available through GESY.
How to request the change
Use the GESY Beneficiary Portal
Open the Beneficiary Portal through the official GESY website. Use the personal doctor registration request area to select your intended doctor and submit the request. The doctor may accept it or ask you to visit. Monitor the request status and any deadline displayed; submitting a request alone does not establish acceptance.
Arrange registration at the practice
HIO also describes registration through the personal doctor’s office. Ask the practice what identification and registration details to bring. Changing doctor involves a mutual acceptance form. Once the new registration is completed, your previous personal doctor registration is removed automatically.
If the portal does not show the option you expect, avoid sending several duplicate requests. Note the message you see and ask the practice or HIO to clarify the next step.
What to prepare
- Your identification and GESY beneficiary details.
- The full name and correct practice location of the new doctor.
- Any relevant information about your current registration date.
- A list of ongoing prescriptions, planned follow-up and pending referrals to discuss with the practice.
- Questions about how the practice will communicate acceptance and arrange your first appointment.
Do not publish identity documents or clinical records in public comments or social media messages. Use the official portal or the practice’s agreed communication route.
If you are helping a child or another adult
Ask HIO or the practice which account permissions and documents are needed for your situation. Being a relative or carer does not by itself tell you which online actions your account can perform. Check the authorised process before trying to submit someone else’s request.
Where to get help
The GESY Contact Centre can clarify registration and portal questions. Call 17000 within Cyprus, or +357 22 017000 from abroad, or email info@gesy.org.cy. Ask about your specific registration circumstances if the standard rule does not seem to fit.
Frequently asked questions
1. Can I change my GESY personal doctor before 12 months?
Some exceptions exist. Check the current official guidance and ask HIO to confirm whether your circumstances qualify.
2. Does a submitted portal request mean the change is complete?
No. Check for acceptance and the updated registration status before treating the new doctor as your registered personal doctor.
3. Is changing personal doctor the same as getting a specialist referral?
No. They are different processes. Our GESY specialist referral guide explains the referral route.
Find and check your next doctor
You can browse doctor profiles on Doctors Cyprus to research options. Always confirm the doctor’s role, GESY participation and current list availability directly.
