To arrange a hearing test in Cyprus, contact an audiology service or an ENT practice and explain who needs the assessment and why. Ask which tests are available, who performs them, whether a referral is needed and what the appointment costs. For a child, confirm that the service provides age-appropriate hearing assessments.

Sudden hearing loss needs immediate medical assessment. If hearing drops suddenly, including in one ear, do not wait for a routine hearing-test appointment. The US National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders advises treating sudden deafness as a medical emergency.

Who should you contact for a hearing assessment?

An ENT doctor assesses conditions affecting the ears, nose and throat. An audiology service focuses on hearing assessment and related support. The appropriate route depends on the reason for the appointment and the services available locally.

When calling, explain whether the appointment is for an adult or child, whether it is a first assessment or follow-up, and whether there has been a new change. Let the service advise on the appropriate appointment rather than choosing a test solely from its name.

Doctors Cyprus includes profiles for Dr Katerina Panagiotidi in Limassol and Dr Stephan Engel in Paphos. These are ENT enquiry options, not confirmation that every hearing test is offered. Contact the relevant practice to check its current assessment services, patient ages and availability.

Common types of hearing test

The NHS overview of hearing tests describes several assessments. The exact combination depends on the person being assessed:

  • Pure-tone audiometry: you listen to sounds through headphones and indicate when you hear them.
  • Speech testing: you listen to speech, such as words, as part of assessing hearing.
  • Tympanometry: an assessment of how the eardrum moves, which helps examine middle-ear function.

Children may need different methods according to their age and development. Ask the service to explain the planned assessment and how a parent or carer can help prepare the child.

Questions to ask when booking in Cyprus

  • Does the appointment include an ENT consultation, an audiology assessment or both?
  • Which tests are included, and could further tests be needed?
  • Who will perform and interpret the assessment?
  • Does the service see patients in the relevant age group?
  • Is the appointment available privately, through GESY or through another arrangement?
  • What referral or other documents are required?
  • What is the total expected fee, and is a written report included?
  • Which languages are available, and are there accessibility arrangements?

These questions help you compare the actual appointment being offered. Two services both described as a “hearing check” may include different assessments or follow-up.

Are hearing tests covered by GESY?

Check the precise service with the provider and HIO. GESY rules for accessing an outpatient specialist do not mean that every hearing test, assessment package or device has the same coverage or charge.

Read the official outpatient specialist guidance and our GESY specialist referral guide. Ask whether the provider participates for the service you need and whether your referral covers that appointment. HIO’s Contact Centre is available on 17000 for clarification.

How to prepare for the appointment

Ask the service for its preparation instructions. Bring any requested referral, previous hearing reports and information about hearing devices you already use. Make a short note of when the difficulty started, whether it affects one or both ears and the everyday situations in which you notice it.

If someone is helping you attend, agree what you want them to know or discuss. Tell the service in advance if you need communication support or help with access to the building.

What to ask about your results

Before leaving, ask the clinician or assessor to explain what the results mean for you, whether any further assessment is recommended and who will arrange it. Request a copy of the report where available and confirm where it will be sent.

Ask about the next step rather than trying to interpret an unfamiliar chart alone. A hearing test is part of an assessment; the clinician should explain any diagnosis or treatment recommendation in context.

Frequently asked questions

1. Can I book a hearing test without a referral?

Ask the provider. Private booking arrangements and GESY referral requirements can differ, and the appropriate appointment depends on the reason for the assessment.

2. Can children attend the same service as adults?

Only if the service provides the appropriate paediatric assessment. Confirm the child’s age when booking rather than assuming that every hearing-test provider sees children.

3. Should sudden hearing loss wait for an available routine slot?

No. Seek immediate medical assessment and explain that the hearing change was sudden.
