For blood tests through GESY in Cyprus, a beneficiary normally needs an electronic referral from a personal doctor or outpatient specialist and can choose a contracted clinical laboratory. A private laboratory can also provide tests outside GESY, with prices and any referral requirements set by the provider.
Before attending, confirm the exact tests, whether fasting or timed preparation is required, the appointment route and how results will reach the requesting clinician.
How GESY blood tests work
- A contracted doctor decides which laboratory tests are clinically appropriate and issues the referral.
- The beneficiary chooses a contracted laboratory.
- The laboratory checks the referral and performs the authorised tests.
- Results are recorded through the system and made available according to HIO procedures, including the beneficiary portal.
- The requesting clinician interprets the results in the context of symptoms, history and treatment.
The HIO laboratory FAQ states that tests performed without a valid GESY referral are not covered through that route. A laboratory’s participation in GESY does not turn every walk-in test into a covered service.
Finding a contracted laboratory
Use the official GESY Provider Search, choose the laboratory service and narrow by district or municipality. Contact the laboratory before travelling to confirm opening hours, whether an appointment is needed and any preparation.
You may generally choose among contracted laboratories, but the referral controls which tests are authorised. If the requested test does not appear, contact the issuing doctor rather than asking the laboratory to guess.
Private blood tests in Cyprus
Private laboratories set their own prices and policies. Some routine tests may be available directly; others may require a clinician’s request or additional information. Ask for an itemised price because a “blood panel” can refer to very different combinations of tests.
Do not order broad testing solely because a package is advertised. Unnecessary testing can produce incidental or unclear findings. A clinician can explain which tests fit the question being investigated and how the result will change care.
How much do blood tests cost?
GESY applies the contributions published by HIO for covered laboratory services, subject to beneficiary rules and annual limits. Private prices vary by laboratory and test. There is no useful single price for “a blood test” because a full blood count, thyroid test, vitamin measurement and specialist molecular analysis are different services.

Preparing for a blood test
- Follow the instructions supplied for the exact test.
- Do not fast unless instructed; different tests have different requirements.
- Ask whether regular medicines should be taken as usual. Do not stop prescribed treatment without clinical advice.
- Confirm whether the sample must be taken at a particular time.
- Bring identification and the referral or booking information requested.
- Tell staff about fainting, difficult blood draws, allergies or other relevant concerns.
Getting and understanding results
A number outside a laboratory reference range does not automatically establish a diagnosis, and a number inside the range does not rule out every problem. Reference ranges, units, age, pregnancy, medicines and clinical circumstances can affect interpretation.
Ask who will review the results, how you will be contacted and what to do if symptoms change before the review. GESY results may be visible in the beneficiary portal, but viewing a report is not the same as receiving clinical interpretation.
