GESY covers a limited package of preventive dental care, not comprehensive dental treatment. Beneficiaries can book the covered preventive visit directly with a contracted GESY dentist, without a referral. The covered service depends on age and requires at least one year since the previous GESY preventive dental visit.
This distinction matters. A check-up and routine scaling may be part of the preventive benefit; fillings, root-canal treatment, crowns, implants, orthodontics and other treatment are not automatically included in that benefit.
What GESY dental care covers by age
The HIO’s published preventive dentistry bulletin and dental activity catalogue set out the following age-related services:
- Under 4: an oral-cavity check and guidance for the parent or guardian on oral hygiene, diet, decay prevention and oral habits.
- Age 4 to under 6: routine scaling, an oral-cavity check and preventive guidance.
- Age 6 to under 12: routine scaling, topical fluoride and an oral-cavity check.
- Age 12 and over: routine scaling and an oral-cavity check.
The HIO bulletin says these preventive services are fully reimbursed, with no co-payment for the beneficiary. The benefit is supplied by a dentist contracted with GESY.
Age is assessed for the beneficiary receiving care. Ask the dental practice to confirm the applicable service when booking, particularly near an age boundary.
Is the cleaning once per calendar year?
No. The HIO describes the entitlement as one visit after at least a full year has passed since the beneficiary’s previous GESY preventive dental visit. It is therefore safer to think in terms of a 12-month interval, not one appointment at any point in each calendar year.
Before reserving a slot, ask the practice to check whether your covered visit is available. Your Beneficiary Portal record can also help you identify when the previous GESY dental activity was recorded.
A dentist may recommend a different check-up or cleaning schedule based on your oral health. That clinical recommendation and the timing of the GESY-funded benefit are separate questions. Discuss your needs and any private fee before agreeing to additional care.
Do you need a referral from your personal doctor?
No. Beneficiaries have direct access to the covered preventive dental service. Contact a contracted dentist and arrange the appointment directly. You do not need to obtain a personal-doctor referral for this preventive visit.
Use the official HIO provider search and select the dentist category to find contracted providers. Confirm participation and availability with the practice, because a dentist’s general online profile does not prove that a particular appointment will be processed through GESY.

What happens if the dentist finds a problem?
The examination may identify something that needs monitoring, investigation or treatment. Ask the dentist to explain:
- What they found and how urgent the next step is.
- Which treatment options are appropriate and why.
- Whether the proposed work is outside the preventive GESY benefit.
- The full private price, including any imaging, laboratory work or follow-up.
- How many appointments are expected and what each visit involves.
Do not treat the covered cleaning as an open allowance toward any dental procedure. Ask for a written treatment plan when several stages or significant private costs are involved. If you have private dental insurance, send the plan to the insurer before treatment and ask about limits, waiting periods and prior approval.

You can book private dental care whether or not you use GESY for the preventive visit. Private fees are set by the practice and depend on the examination, treatment and materials. The published preventive package described here does not list routine fillings. Ask the dentist for the diagnosis, options and private price before treatment.
Does GESY cover root-canal treatment, crowns or implants?
Those services are not part of the general preventive dental activities in the HIO catalogue cited here. There may be other healthcare routes for specific clinical circumstances, but they should be confirmed individually rather than assumed.
Can I visit a different dentist next time?
The HIO bulletin says the beneficiary is not required to use the same contracted dentist repeatedly. The one-year interval still relates to the beneficiary’s previous GESY preventive dental visit, not to a particular practice.
Can I pay privately for another cleaning before the next covered visit?
Ask a dentist what is clinically appropriate and what the private fee would be. Paying privately does not move or expand the HIO benefit; confirm your next covered date separately.
